The word "crémaillère" in French literally means a trammel, which is the adjustable hook on which the stewing pot is attached. In days gone by, when neighbors would assist in house building or barn raising, the lady of the house would create a feast, the first meal of the dwelling, to thank everyone for their kindness. The act of hanging the crémaillère was the ultimate act of hospitality and good food.

The restaurant was opened in 1947 and has been a family business since 1961. The owner of La Crémaillère is Robert Olivier Meyzen.
